Microsoft -owned GitHub on Wednesday introduced a more expensive Copilot assistant for developers inside companies that can explain and provide recommendations about internal source code. Last month Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts on a conference call that GitHub Copilot had accumulated 1 million paid users. The new GitHub Copilot Enterprise will cost more than double the business offering, at $39 per person per month. On GitHub's website, people with Copilot Enterprise licenses can choose repositories to fine-tune Copilot on proprietary code. From there, they can ask GitHub's Copilot chatbot about elements of existing code and suggest lines of code in development environments.

The European Parliament has approved the bloc's landmark rules for artificial intelligence, known as the EU AI Act, clearing a major hurdle for the first formal regulation of AI in the West to become law. What generative AI is capable of, from producing music lyrics to generating code, has wowed academics, businesspeople and even school students. During a critical Wednesday vote, the Parliament adopted the AI Act with 499 votes in favor, 28 against and 93 abstentions. Generative AI developers will be required to submit their systems for review before releasing them commercially. The laws have huge implications for developers of generative AI models, such as the Microsoft -backed OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google 's Bard.

The technology, known as generative AI, has been pioneered by OpenAI, the lab behind the ChatGPT writing system and the Dall-E visual illustration generator. Copilot, as well as other tools from Amazon.com Inc., International Business Machines Corp. , and startups like Tabnine Inc. and Magic AI Inc., have quickly found a receptive audience among developers seeking a productivity boost. The AI model behind Copilot is trained on data from GitHub, which houses a popular open-source community where developers contribute and share code. Put another way, for every 100 lines of code, 40 are being written by the AI, with total project time cut by up to 55%. "After a year of Copilot, about 40% of code was written by the AI where Copilot was enabled," Dohmke said. The GitHub CEO expects more of those Copilot code suggestions to be taken — in the next five years, up to 80%. Now, whether the coding task is related to payment processing or a social media login, most companies — whether startups or established enterprises — put in open source code. "From punch cards to building everything ourselves to open source, to now within a lot of code, AI writing more," he said.
